PROPER WILD GAME HABITAT MANAGEMENT MEANS HUNTING SUCCESS Focusing on the habitat for bobwhite quail is at the forefront of off-season activities at Brentwood. About 2800 acres of our plantation are always being intensively managed for quail. These acres consist of old stands of longleaf pine, upland mixed pine, hardwood areas, winding open fields, and corridors of planted longleaf, loblolly, and slash pines.
HOW DO WE MAINTAIN AND/OR ENHANCE THE NATURAL QUAIL HABITAT? During the Spring and Summer months, our primary focus is on the continual improvement of habitat. The vast majority of our staff's time is spent ensuring that the habitat at Brentwood is not only maintained, but continually improved. By maintaining a pro-active approach to our acreage during the off-season, we can help ensure a successful hunting experience for our hunters once hunting season arrives.
A major part of this habitat maintenance involves performing
the following tasks:
Prescribed burning
Strip disking
Ongoing plantings of both annuals and perennials
On any given year, "food patches" (long narrow strips
of corn, milo, and other grains), account for 80 - 100 acres
Native birds are fed year-round with more and more emphasis
being placed on our rapidly growing native bird population
