Focus on the habitat is at the forefront of off-season activities
at Brentwood. About 1200 acres of the overall 2800 acres are being
intensively managed for quail. These acres consists of old stands
of longleaf pine, upland mixed pine, hardwood areas, winding open
fields, corridors of planted longleaf, loblolly, and slash pines.
EXACTLY HOW DO WE MAINTAIN THE HABITAT?
During the Spring and Summer months, our primary focus is on the
continual improvement of habitat. The vast majority of our staff's
time is spent ensuring that the habitat at Brentwood is not only
maintained, but continually improved.
A major part of this habitat maintenance involves performing
the following tasks:
Prescribed burning
Strip disking
Ongoing plantings of both annuals and perennials
On any given year, "food patches" (long narrow strips
of corn, milo, and other grains), account for 80 - 100 acres
Native birds are fed year-round with more and more emphasis
being placed on our rapidly growing native bird population.
